Femtocells require a very accurate timing source to ensure that they transmit (and receive) at exactly the right frequency - to within an accuracy of +/- 0.25 parts per million. This comprises an accurate frequency crystal such as a Temperature Compensated Voltage Controller crystal oscillator (TCVCXO) combined with a long term frequency derived from an external input such as the internet, GPS, TV or other signals.
