Image This Chinese vendor has a wide range of infrastructure covering all major technologies and including radio and core network components. They have around 8% market share of Mobile Infrastructure globally in 2007, with heavy growth in developing markets.

They demonstrated a prototype 3G femtocell which includes HSDPA and HSUPA data at Expo Comm Wireless Japan in July 2007.

Trials have been run in Europe and Asia (specifically including SK Telecom in South Korea). Press reports suggest trials by Telefonica, Orange and JSC Ukrtelecom(Ukraine).

Technical information is sparse, but it is understood that Huawei provide a complete solution including their own femto-gateway. An Iu interface based architecture is used but not UMA or SIP/IMS. Huawei already have an 3G RNC product, and already offer IP backhaul for their standard Node B, so it is thought possible that their Home Node B uses Iub over IP and interworks with their existing RNC.Huawei have active in the femtocell standards community, and so are likely to develop a solution which conforms to the final agreed standard.

Huawei femtocell UAP3801

Details of the Home Node B UAP3801 pictured above indicate two releases of the product, the latter being much smaller and lighter:

  • First Release: 1.5kg and 1.5litres

  • Second Release:0.5Kg and 1 litre.

The product has very similar specifications to other femtocells, supporting 4 simultaneous voice calls and 8 data sessions using HSPA with download speeds of up to 7.2Mbit/s, upload rates of 1.4Mbit/s.

Vodafone have publicised a trial in Spain involving both Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent femtocells.

Starhub have publicised a six month trial in Singapoer involving both Huawei and ZTE femtocells in May 2008
