Cisco Cisco, the world's best known internet equipment provider, supplies many of the high capacity routers used within the Internet backbone. It also has divisions such as Linksys supplying smaller products for enterprise and domestic markets, including set-top boxes which are likely to incorporate femtocell technology in the future.

Cisco is visible only as a femtocell supplier today, but could potentially become involved in several areas of femtocell products:

  • Femtocell Access Points
  • Integrated Home Gateways
  • Femtocell Gateways

Cisco Femtocell Access Points

It had made a strategic investment in a leading independent femtocell vendor - UK based ip.access in January 2008. Cisco appears to be integrating their technology into their own products.

ATT's 3G Microcell is clearly badged as a Cisco product, with ip.access not mentioned in any of the publicity.

Cisco Femtocell Gateway

Their wireless access gateway is marketed as being appropriate to use within a femtocell gateway. It is unclear if it is used for this purpose by any femtocell gateway vendor, although it is possible that ip.access gateway may incorporate it.

Cisco Femtocell Integrated Home Gateways

We can expect to see more Cisco branded consumer and enterprise products incorporating femtocell technology. These may well appear as Linksys branded products rather than with the Cisco logo.

As of September 2009, Cisco's website does not hold any information about their femtocell products or plans.
