Airwalk is a startup company focussed on the CDMA marketplace. The company is based in Richardson, Texas and completed a second round of $25M VC investment funding in January 2008. Produces pico and femtocell products for enterprise and home use.

The Airwalk EdgePoint femtocell product can support both 2G and 3G CDMA technologies, and be configured to operate at many of the common CDMA frequency bands.

The product was officially launched at the CTIA exhibition in early April 2008.  The architecture combines a base station transceiver, base station controller, and network interfaces into a single unit, and can be configured for either 1xEV-DO Rev. A or 1xRTT, thus enabling high speed data whilst maintaining compatability with older CDMA voice handsets.

The EdgePoint specification includes:
  • Single band 800 or 1900Mhz
  • 20-200mW power output
  • Automatic configuration
  • Plug and play installation

In this interview, their CEO highlights some of the benefits of femtocells against WiFi, announces that their next femtocell will be LTE based (the 4G radio interface being adopted by both GSM and CDMA families), and promotes IMS as the preferred long term core network architecture rather than softswitch.
